31 Days Closer to a Cuter You! Day 9 "Topsy Turvy"

Remember that dressing to flatter your figure is all about creating symmetry or a balanced look to your body. For today I am going to look at one challenge area for each of the body types and give you a couple of ways to create symmetry by focusing on your challenging area. I have tried to find an example of a top and a dress for each figure type. (Whew!)

The H/d/rectangle ~
Challenge: define your waist
 Find:
  •  shirts with embellishments around the bust and shoulders with a fitted waist.
  • tops and dresses with an empire waist
  • skirts with details, seaming or pockets that add the illusion of curves to your hips.
Sheath dress

The O/apple ~
Challenge: create curves on bottom to avoid a top heavy look
Find:
  • tailored tunic style tops that nip-in at the waist.
  • fuller flowing skirts that gently skim away from your body will help fill out your hips.
Wrap dress >
(to prevent showing cleavage, add a cami underneath)

The Inverted triangle ~
Challenge: de-emphasize shoulder width and create curves on bottom
Find:
  • shirts with deep scoop or V-necks narrow your upper body.
  • dresses that nip in the waist and have fuller skirts to create curves

A beautiful style for inverted triangle shape >
best dress example I could find for inverted triangle

The A/d/pear ~
Challenge: Balance shoulder/bust area with wider hips
Find:

  •  tops with wide, deep V-necklines that add volume to the bust with a snug fitting empire waist. Add flutter or princess sleeves for a more dramatic effect.
  • shirts with a fitted waist and embellishments around the bust and shoulders to balance your lower half.

The X/hourglass ~
Challenge: Avoid the “too’s” – too form fitting, too sloppy, too boxy
Find:
  • Accentuate your waist by adding a belt to hip-length basic tops.
  • wrap style dresses and tops
  • tailored jackets that conform to your natural curves and have nipped-in waists. Choose jackets that end at the hip bone and add a belt to further enhance your hourglass figure

As I have said I am a short X and although I do not always "get it right" I want to show you an example of when I did get it right and why.

  • scoop neck
  • defined waist
  • straight/pencil style skirt
  • mid knee length (great for my height)
Upcoming: best jeans/pants style; bathing suits (Eeek!)

  1. I've always had a hard time finding clothes that look good on me. A lot of it has to do with me being 6 foot tall. Shirts and blouses always seem to fall short on the length. Finding pants isn't as hard as finding tops.
    Have a beautiful day.

  2. Well, yes, you did get it right! You look great. I'm seem to be floundering with my clothes these days. Still so much weight to lose! Thank you for these tips; I'm going to find a picture when I got it right and keep that look for this season.

  3. Great job searching for and describing all the body types! A terrific help for all of us, it seems.

It's funny now because when I watch a tv show, I'm trying to pick out their body type! ha!
