Passion & "Pi"

Yesterday I got an email from my son's geometry teacher. It made me smile. Her email is below. My son has a passion for "Parkour," the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle. When our boy, Andrew, went to Heaven on 12/15/09, his older brother said his parkour training is now dedicated to Andrew. Below are photos of Avery's parkour tricks.

Some of the kids wrote Pi poems for our Pi Day party today– which means that the number of letters in each word of the poem is a digit of the irrational number pi. The poem could have any theme they wanted. Most of the poems were fun and silly.

Avery’s was maybe a glimpse to his heart and thoughts:

Pi Poem - (by Avery)

“Can we as mortals understand the Almighty power of the Creator?
I say we cannot, that it is something greater.
Life is a meaningless rift?
I come, I go, I lie, I live.
Being alive a wonderful gift.”

  1. Hi Mel, I would love it if you could be praying for my friend Mary and her family. She is a wife and mother of ten children, has lived with breast cancer for seven years, just MOnday night suffered a stroke and multiple seizures. It seems she is coming to the end of her earthly life. Would you mind praying for her and her family...thanks so much.

  2. What a beautiful glimpse into Avery's heart! He shows great understanding at such an early age and I'm sure his grief has played a great role in that. My prayers continue to be with you all ... and now I have added Susanne's friend Mary from her comment above to my prayers as well.

  4. I see so much in this. At a glance the pics reminded me of Andrew also. Love the rainbow colors as Avery flies through the air. I think of Andrew doing a similar thing with his skateboard in heaven. Avery understands that we cannot understand. What wisdom he has been given. Because Christ overcame the world, we will also. May God give Avery double as he runs his race honoring his brother. Crying as I type this. Love to you Melanie and all your family, Barbara

  5. WOW The pics of Avery "flying" on his board are soo awesome. And what wisdom he has been given at such a young age. The Lord has mighty things in mind for him no doubt. I love that he is honoring his brother in this way. Have a good day Melanie. Hugs, Deb

  6. That was really deep..I do believe that Avery is a lot like his mother..gifted, soulful, and passionate. I never heard of Parkour, but it looks like it takes a whole lot of discipline and dedication.

  8. Okay- this post just strikes a real cool chord in me. I get excited over words and I'm giddy to have learned a new one here today: parkour. Also, I have a former math professor from college, whom I adore. She loves all things math and she would ignite reading this post. I must share it with her. The poem that Avery wrote is simply amazing and blessed me beyond the discovery of mathematical pi and I just have to give this pi poem a try and certainly share it with my math prof. Is that okay? I'm wondering if I understand the rules completely, so I am going back to your post to re-read. Loved! This! Post! Thanks Avery and mom!!

  9. Okay Melanie, so I'm still here pondering this. Pi is infinite, right? So, basically the number of letters of each word could be any number 1 - 9, basically. Do I have this correct?

I also forgot to say how awesome the final picture above is, a summy through a rainbow? Get out! Is it photoshopped or for real? That is gorgeous!

  10. Avery's parkour acrobatics are very impressive. I watched a you-tube clip of parkour participants a while back, pretty amazing stuff. A Deep thinker....your boy!

Suzanne, I too, will be in prayer for Mary and her family.

  13. Pretty impressive son! I know how hard it is to do a 'push up'... and he's really focused and working at it to do these 'tricks'. The poem is also very revealing, he's a thinker. The dedication of his training, to Andrew, is going to give him more determination than ever. Good job Avery!
